Veterans
Veterans and Mesothelioma
Veterans who served between 1940s through the 1970s have the highest risk of getting mesothelioma. The use of asbestos-containing products was not prohibited in the United States until 1975. Millions of asbestos products were used in the insulation of sleeping quarters, floorings, engines, and boiler rooms. Due to the military’s heavy usage of asbestos products, many veterans were exposed to the fibers and became ill, then eventually diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Navy Veterans and Asbestos
Navy veterans were the most vulnerable to asbestos-exposure due to the large quantities of asbestos products used on the vessels. Veterans who worked majority of their time below deck have the highest risk for mesothelioma. Examples of asbestos-containing products that were used in the Navy include:
• Gaskets
• Brake pedals
• Flooring
• Vessel insulation
• Cement
• Adhesives used throughout vessel
• Piping/plumbing
Like all other service members, Navy veterans have rights that include adequate health care, as well as financial compensation for their losses. If you are a Navy veteran and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related illnesses, you can contact us to learn more about how much you may be entitled to in compensation for the pain, suffering and medical expenses this disease has inflicted upon you.
Veterans Health Department
The Veterans Affairs Department is responsible for the health and care of veterans and their dependents. Veterans can qualify for either benefits or pension, but not both. A veteran of the United States military branch may be eligible for benefits provided by the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Claims by veterans are normally processed at the VA and general forms and information on benefits are available at:
http://www1.va.gov/opa/publications/benefits_books.asp
State VA offices advocate on behalf of veterans in their claims and benefits. However, the actual processing and decision on each claim is made by the Federal VA Department. Supplemental state VA benefits may be available, and vary by state. Additional benefits may include hospice and palliative care, which would be significant for veterans with mesothelioma.
