Gemzar

 

Gemzar is an anti-cancer chemotherapy drug and is classified as an antimetabolite. Gemzar treatments are normally administered to patients who have pancreatic cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (mesothelioma), soft-tissue sarcoma, bladder cancer, and metastatic breast cancer. Gemzar is similar to Alimta as it also blocks or interferes with the cancer cell growth process. Gemzar is given intravenously and it is not to be given if a patient is also doing radiation therapy.  Gemzar treatment dosages are dependant on a patient’s general overall health, weight, height, and cancer type. Things to avoid during Gemzar treatments are:

  It is important that patients who are planning to get pregnant, may be pregnant, or are pregnant avoid receiving Gemzar treatments as it can affect the unborn child. It is encouraged by physicians that patients also use contraceptive pills during the time they are receiving treatments to avoid any complications. In addition to negative effects on pregnancy, patients also need to take caution to other side effects, such as:  

  It is advised that a mesothelioma patient not receive Gemzar if there is a history of kidney or liver disease. Although the side effects are generally predictable as far as its onset, duration and severity, it is important patients continue to consult with their physicians when any of the symptoms occur.
