Asbestos in Massachusetts

Massachusetts Asbestos

Massachusetts has both industry-related and naturally occurring asbestos. The naturally occurring asbestos deposits are found near the Quabbin Reservoir and in the W.R. Grace & Company mine located in North Cambridge. In addition to the natural deposits, there are over 350 businesses that have used asbestos, particularly found in the old historical buildings around Massachusetts.

There are many school facilities, companies and retail stores in Massachusetts that have used asbestos for heat and fire insulation. Though many have begun the abatement process, it is not guaranteed that all of those who work in, attend classes in or shop in these facilities are even aware there are still asbestos-containing products within.

Jobs with Asbestos Exposure

Power plants are known for its usage of asbestos to provide insulation for its pipes. Asbestos is composed of small, thin fibers that are woven together to create products that are fireproof and heat resistant, providing ideal insulation for pipes that generate millions of megawatts of electrical energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition to power plant workers, the following are also at risk for asbestos exposure:

Pipe fitters

Boilermakers

Ship fitters

Steel workers

Maintenance and repair workers

Gas refinery workers

Steel industry workers
