Indiana has naturally occurring asbestos deposits. Even naturally occurring asbestos can be deadly and lead to asbestosis or mesothelioma. Asbestosis occurs when the tissue of the lung’s linings begins to scar and constricts movement, making it difficult and uncomfortable to breathe. Mesothelioma is also asbestos-induced that causes cancer in the lining of the lungs.
Jobs with Asbestos Exposure
Steel mills more than likely use asbestos in their insulation and protective gear. Asbestos is used heavily in the steel industry because it is both heat and fire resistant. Construction or demolition jobs are also at risk for asbestos exposure due to the products that are used during the construction of a building or the demolition of a building.
Power plants also provide asbestos exposure opportunities to those who live in Indiana. With hundreds across the state providing energy to all buildings and residential homes, the presence of power plants increases surrounding areas’ chances of asbestos exposure. Those who work in the plants already have a high risk of exposure, now their friends and families might experience secondary exposure through fibers that are found on the workers’ clothes.

Asbestos Deaths in Indiana
Over 550 deaths occurred between 1979 and 1999 that were asbestos-related. Asbestosis was the cause of approximately 124 deaths, while mesothelioma caused the remaining 428 deaths. While asbestosis is treatable to some extent, it still can run the risk of turning into mesothelioma.
When asbestos fibers are torn or disturbed, the particles are released in the air and that makes it more likely to be inhaled. Upon inhalation, the fibers make their way into the respiratory system where they attach themselves to the lining of your lungs. Either the scarring of your lungs occur (asbestosis) or the development of lung-lining cancer (mesothelioma).
