Mesothelioma Staging

Once diagnosed with Mesothelioma, the physician will then begin the staging process. The staging process is used to find out how far the cancer has spread.  When physicians are attempting to determine how advanced the patient’s case of Mesothelioma is, CT Scans and MRIs (Imaging Studies) are used.  This process is important, as it will affect the treatment and prognosis of Mesothelioma.

The Butchart Staging System is the most common used system for measuring Mesothelioma staging. This system is only used for Pleural Mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the lungs) because it is the most common type of  Mesothelioma.
