- Malignant Mesothelioma: The good news
Patients diagnosed as positive for Malignant Mesothelioma has increased at an alarming rate. Today, there are at least 14 cases per million persons in the United States that develop Malignant Mesothelioma each year. This means that over 3000 people are diagnosed with Malignant Mesothelioma annually. This number may be understated, as there are cases where Mesothelioma is not diagnosed properly.
The incubation period within the human body for Mesothelioma can take a long time, sometimes between 25 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. The rise in Mesothelioma cases can be traced back to the great building booms of the sixties and seventies. This was before asbestos was known publicly as a health hazard. Working in the mining industry, shipbuilding or construction, especially the insulating industry is where the most risk occurred.
Most patient's die within two years of being diagnosed with Mesothelioma, which contributes to Mesothelioma being known as such a deadly disease. Sometimes the symptoms are confused with an asthmatic condition or lung infection and by the time it is diagnosed correctly it is often too late. The fact that people were just going to work not knowing the dangers they were being exposed to makes it a tragic disease and only many years later do they find out the dangers they were subjected to.
