- Malignant Mesothelioma: The good news
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the Mesothelial cells. These cells are tissue that form two protective layers around the lungs, heart and stomach known as Mesothelium. Within these two layers of protection, the Mesothelium creates a lubricating fluid that is held between these two layers. Together with the two layers and this lubricating liquid, the organs within the human body are protected; allowing them to move against other organs or body structures reducing friction and thus protecting them from wear.
There are two types of tumors of the Mesothelium known as benign and malignant. A benign tumor is non-cancerous. This means it will not harm you. A malignant tumor of the Mesothelium is called Malignant Mesothelioma. Since tumors of the Mesothelium are usually cancerous, Malignant Mesothelioma is called Mesothelioma. There was a time when Malignant Mesothelioma was very rare.
