Battleships
All ships constructed by the Navy until the 1980s contain asbestos. The hazardous substance was used extensively in battleships due to its strong resistance to fire, heat and corrosion. Boiler room, engine rooms, sleeping quarters, mess halls and navigation rooms were filled with asbestos-containing materials.
Naval veterans working on the building, maintenance, demolition or renovation of these ships were likely exposed to elevated levels of asbestos. Many veterans are being diagnosed with Mesothelioma and other asbestos-linked diseases as a result of this exposure that they encountered during their service in military.
Here is a list of U.S. Navy Battleships commissioned from the 1930s through the 1970s. These ships had various products containing asbestos. (These battleships no longer remain on active duty).
