Man Sues 22 Companies in Asbestos Case
A man is suing 22 defendant companies for allegedly causing him to develop lung cancer by exposing him to asbestos-containing products all through his career.
Larry Southerland has filed a lawsuit against the companies in St. Clair County Circuit Court on December 6. The suit doesn’t specify where Southerland resides.
The complaint says Southerland was exposed to toxic asbestos fibers while working as a drywall installer in the Atlanta area at Garner Drywall from 1974 until 1980 and as a drywall installer at Davco Construction from 1980 until 1993.
Southerland says the companies should have known of the hazards of asbestos, but failed to exercise proper care and caution for his safety.
On account of his fatal disease, Southerland became disabled and disfigured, incurred medical expenses and suffered enormous physical pain and mental anguish, the suit states. Additionally, he became prevented from pursuing his normal course of employment and, thus lost large amounts of money that would have accrued to him, the complaint says.
Southerland is asking for a judgment in excess of $50,000 in his five-count complaint. Additionally, he is seeking compensatory damages of more than $100,000 and punitive and exemplary damages of more than $100,000, and any other relief to which he might be entitled.
