Asbestos Victim Seeks Damages
A mesothelioma victim is suing his former employer Avondale Shipyards and a dozen other companies for exposing him to asbestos during his employment and thus causing his fatal disease.
Harold P. Guarino has filed a lawsuit against the companies on December 8 in Orleans Parish Civil District Court. The defendant companies include miners, manufacturers, sellers, users, distributors and/or suppliers of asbestos.
Guarino says he was exposed to asbestos during his career and consequently developed mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers.
According to the lawsuit, Guarino was exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos fibers while working for Avondale Shipyards as tacker from 1969-70 and 1972-1980. The plaintiff says he inhaled high levels of airborne fibers while working with asbestos and asbestos-coated products.
The defendants are blamed for continuously exposing Guarino to asbestos without enough safeguards. Guarino is seeking unspecified amount of damages to cover medical expenses, lost earnings, mental suffering and anguish, physical pain, and loss of quality of life.
