Property owner and manager charged in asbestos case
Two people were criminally charged for illegally removing asbestos, a known carcinogen, from the former Cambria Air Force Station, a Cold War-era military radar site.
Luther Sherman Akers, the manager of the property, was accused of felony illegal disposal of harmful asbestos waste on the property and two misdemeanor land use violations. He is 68 years old.
Bernd Schaefers, the property owner, was accused of two misdemeanor charges involving coastal zone land use law. He also is 68 years old. Schaefers was the producer of the 1984 film “The Never-Ending Story,” and a 1986 motion picture “The Name of the Rose”. Anyway, Schaefers has not been charge for illegal asbestos abatement.
According to county code enforcement Officer Harley Voss, Schaefers and Akers both are liable for unauthorized renovations on two buildings and a septic system on the 34-acre property.
The property, which has a 360-degree view of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding mountains, now contains several deteriorating buildings. From the 1940s to 1980, it was operated by the Air Force.
Schaefers’ attorney didn’t comment on the issue.
