Couple Wins $3 Million in Asbestos Case
Brownsville, TX – A couple has won $3 million in an asbestos-related case against 3 defendant corporations.
On behalf of Oscar Torres and his wife Dora, the Brownsville jury assigned 45% fault to Union Carbide Corporation, 45% fault to Garlock Sealing Technologies, and 10% fault to Brown & Root.
Torres was an employee of Brown & Root in the 1970s and he worked at the Union Carbide plant in Brownsville, Texas, as part of his duty. According to court documents, there he was exposed to defective Garlock products containing asbestos and asbestos fibers. As a result of this exposure, Torres developed a fatal asbestos-related cancer.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral that was once widely used for various construction and industrial purposes. Its use was restricted once its hazards became known, though the material is still not fully banned. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause severe respiratory problems and terminal diseases such as lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.
The case was tried in front of Judge Ben Euresti of the 107th District Court. The plaintiffs were awarded $1 million in past damages and $2 million for future damages.
