No Dangerous Asbestos Levels in Buffalo Police Station

Mayor Byron W. Brown said there were no hazardous levels of asbestos in the temporarily closed Northwest District police station.

Air samples had been taken to test the levels of asbestos, radon gas, volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide in the building at 669 Hertel Ave.

According to the test results, asbestos levels are not high. Keith Keller, an official with Leader Group of Clarence, said other test results are expected to be known by the middle of next week. The building had been hired by the city for conducting the tests.

Ecology & Environment of Lancaster also has started taking samples from the station that was closed Friday as a precaution.

Mayor Brown said the city takes the health and safety of its employees very seriously.

“We have retained another consultant to go through that building with a fine tooth comb,” Brown said.

Brown said the building will reopen once it has been declared safe.

“Or the city will undertake the work in case remedies are required,” Brown said.

Brown assured the public that police services remain prompt as operations were repositioned for the time being to a closed school building at Minnesota Avenue and Cordova Street.
