Lisbon School Board Approves Asbestos Abatement Project

LISBON – Lisbon Central School Board has approved asbestos removal and bathroom renovations at the school building.

The complete outline of the project will be available after the next board meeting. Representatives from Bernier, Carr & Associates, Watertown, has asked the board to pick from a list of possible projects so they could start preparations.

Pamela S. Beyor of Bernier Carr said the company wants to get started right away if they are going to do the job.

“We don’t want to wait until the mid-January,” she said.

Rick W. Tague of Bernier Carr also have requested the board to take a quick decision so that construction companies will get more time to work with a vacant school.

The school board has been offered a list of renovation options by the consultants, along with estimated costs.

The board approved removal of asbestos floor tiles in 15 elementary classrooms and the elementary corridor for an estimated cost of $297,864. It also approved renovations to some rest rooms shared between elementary classes, which would increase the number of toilets and add cabinetry to the classrooms. The estimated cost for these renovations is $92,000.

As asbestos was a very popular construction material before the 1980s, it is present in almost all old school buildings. Since asbestos is a known carcinogen, its removal should be done with extreme care. Only licensed contractors are supposed to handle the job.
