Lafayette High School Closes over Asbestos Concerns

An SAT test planned for Brooklyn’s Lafayette High School Saturday was unexpectedly called off due to potential asbestos contamination in the building.

As city officials failed to act swiftly to address construction problems from Thursday, several kids were left standing in the rain, according to teachers union officials.

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew said there is not excuse for the education department to fail to keep up the strict supervision of its contractors and to ensure that our buildings meet the topmost safety standards.

According to officials from the Department of Education, there were no signs of a health concern. Spokesman Will Havemann said the College Board determined to abandon Saturday morning’s SAT even though air tests had indicated conditions at Lafayette High School were safe.

“The test will be rescheduled for later this month,” Havemann said.

Teacher Mila Bary said classes at the Lafayette building were also cancelled. She said she was not aware of the problems before arriving to work.

Bary said she is not at all worried about her health as she had faced more terrible conditions previously in her life. She had survived the Chernobyl nuclear disaster before emigrated from Russia.

“I am not the kind of person to be worried. Nothing worries me after the Chernobyl disaster,” Bary said.

Union officials said additional tests were necessary after asbestos was removed improperly. They were planning to visit the building yesterday.
