Widow Wins $995,000 in Asbestos Case
Panama City, FL – A widow from Florida was awarded $995,000 in damages and medical bills in a case concerning the death of her husband after developing asbestos-related lung cancer.
It was in 2006 that Betty McBride’s legal representatives filed the wrongful death lawsuit against a number of companies that supplied equipment in the power plants where Betty’s husband Woodrow McBride worked from 1968 to 1996.
Woodrow McBride worked at Smith Power Plant in Southport from 1968 to 1969 and from 1975 to 1996 and at Crist Power Plant in Pensacola from 1969 to 1975. During this period, according to the lawsuit, Woodrow was exposed to asbestos, particularly during the installation and maintenance of various boilers that used the cancer-causing substance as insulation.
A jury in the state’s Bay County ruled in favor of Betty.
Betty McBride was awarded $245,000 for her husband’s medical bills, $225,000 the pain and suffering in the past and $525,000 for future pain and suffering.
It was in September 2005 that Woodrow McBride was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an incurable lung cancer caused only by asbestos exposure. He died on September 20, 2006 when he was 67 years old.
