Birmingham Widow Wins Asbestos Case

After a long legal fight to prove her husband suffered a painful death from asbestos-related disease caused by his job at a building firm, a brokenhearted Birmingham widow has won a huge payout.

Raymond Keen, of Smiths Wood, developed mesothelioma, an incurable cancer caused by asbestos exposure, and died within weeks after the diagnosis. Keen, father of three kids, was 66 when he was diagnosed with the deadly disease in March 2006.

Janet Keen, Raymond’s widow, was fighting for years to prove her claim. In an out-of-court compensation settlement, now she received the six-figure payout from insurers representing Raymond’s former employer Unilock Limited, presently known as Transplastix Ltd.

“Justice has been done for my husband,” Mrs Keen said.

She said that Raymond had been an active and fit man throughout his life.

“We had been married for 47 years and it was awful watching Ray change from being such a healthy man who loved his gardening and helping his three children with jobs around the home, to a shadow of his former self in just a small number of months,” Mrs Keen said.
